Students and visitors at the new Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) enjoy daylit, open spaces and striking views of lush greenery. They do not see the sophisticated technology that keeps them safe and comfortable. A polytechnic is a complex infrastructure. It must provide a clean, green and comfortable environment for learning. And it must operate efficiently to conserve precious energy resources. Nanyang Polytechnic met these challenges and more in its sprawling 30 hectares campus which opened in 1998.
To ensure cost-effective construction and long-term campus efficiency, NYP selected CNA to provide integration of the wide spectrum of services including HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing and Sanitation, Lighting Automation, Fire Alarm, Security, PABX, Structured Cabling Network, Office Automation and Information Kiosk Systems. Design integration had helped Nanyang Polytechnic keep its construction cost low. It had also helped the project proceed with a minimum of installation scheduling conflicts, variation orders and retrofits.

High-speed robust PLCs were installed throughout the campus to provide round-the-clock monitoring and control of security and alarming functions, indoor comfort and energy conservation. PLCs are linked by high-speed fibre optic network from building to building within the campus.
The integrated solution includes an Information Kiosk System which provides facilities like directional aids to campus guests and bulletins on campus activities. |
For enhanced security, the campus has a comprehensive security system comprising more than 300 smart card-readers and 300 closed-circuit television cameras. In addition to the security features, the Integrated Security System also provides facilities reservation, time and attendance and guard tour. When a student presents his smart card at a smart card-reader at a lecture theatre, the system scans the card to make sure that the student is authorized to attend the particular lecture. The system also records the student's entry and updates his attendance record as well, thus freeing the lecturer from such mundane tasks and allows him to focus on teaching. |

NYP is an example of environmentally responsible development which optimizes the manipulation of land features, vegetation, building shape, window placement as well as prevailing sun and wind angles to enhance its thermal performance, daylighting and cooling loads. It also exploits ‘state-of-the-art' technology to improve energy and operational efficiency and create a healthy and comfortable indoor environment for its students. The creative use of vegetation and water elements adds aesthetic appeal to the campus and helps rejuvenate the mind, body and soul.
In 2004, CNA, in its role as Energy Consultant , helped NYP win 1st position in BCA Energy Efficiency Building Awards as well as 1st position in Asean Energy Efficiency Awards . In 2005, NYP went on to clinch BCA Platinum Green Mark Award . Like the USA 's LEED program, the Green Mark Award emphasizes state-of-the-art strategies for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. CNA's integrated solution at the Nanyang Polytechnic has created an efficient, safe and comfortable environment. The operational efficiencies achieved will benefit Nanyang Polytechnic well into the future. |
