The world’s latest economic miracle, Qatar, is all set to provide a spectacular first impression to business visitors and tourists with a spanking new airport, NDIA, which will cost a massive US$ 2.5 billion in just the first phase alone. NDIA is scheduled to open in 2009 in the first phase and will be capable of handling 12 million passengers a year, together with 750,000 tonnes of cargo.

Once fully developed in 2015 at a cost of US$5.5 billion, the airport is expected to handle up to 50 million passengers and 2 million tonnes of cargo a year. One of the project’s key features is that 40% of the site will be built on reclaimed land from the Persian Gulf.

CNA is proud to be selected by Takenaka / CDC JV to provide a comprehensive suite of advanced special airport systems including Building Management System, Public Address System, Fire Alarm System, Structured Cabling System and Master Clock System to enhance the airport’s operational and energy efficiency, passenger comfort and life-safety at the VVIP Emiri Terminal.

Within the Emiri Terminal, the passenger spaces will be environmentally controlled by unified special systems such as building management, lighting and dimming systems as special air-to-air energy recovery air-conditioning units.

The airport systems will be connected terminal-wide by a fibre-optic backbone communications systems provided by CNA. This will facilitate the communication and control of all facilities at the terminal. Strategic use of fibre optics will ensure that the operating system remains adaptable as future airport needs evolve.

The Emiri terminal will provide an elegant gateway for the Royal family, senior government officials and visiting dignitaries. Ceremonial in style, its design once again reflects the NDIA’s waterside setting.

Made up of layers of longitudinally-curved walls with triangular sections, the exterior walls are reminiscent of high nautical sails. These rise up through the higher, wide areas of the terminal where the main majlis is located, and through the glazed roof above. The main entrance will overlook a spectacular Emiri lagoon with distinguished water features. The Emiri facilities will include private quarters for the rulers, press and business centres, and significant security features.
